
Local SportsThursday, March 11, 2010NW Ohio Basketball Selections: L-B's Craft, Hyde among top honoreesLiberty-Benton's Aaron Craft and Amanda Hyde, two multi-talented players whose all-around skills led their teams to 20-0 regular-season records and a No.1-ranking in the state polls, were named Division III Players of the Year in boys and girls all-Northwest Ohio basketball selections released by the Associated Press Wednesday. Craft, a 6-foot-2 senior who will play college ball at Ohio State, averaged 26.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.5 assists for the Eagles. Already a two-time all-state pick, Craft has led L-B to 20-0, 20-0, 19-1 and 20-0 regular-season records in his four years as a starter. Hyde led L-B's girls to the Division III state semifinals a year ago and a 20-0 record and No.1-state ranking in 2009-10. The 5-10 senior wing, who has signed a national letter of intent with Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne, averaged 21.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.1 assist. She made 66.5 percent of her 2-point attempts, 43.8 of her 3-pointers and shot 91 percent from the line. Craft topped the 1,600-point career scoring mark in L-B's boys sectional final win over Riverdale. Hyde surpassed 1,600 career points in Tuesday's regional semifinal game with Tinora. Liberty-Benton's Steve Williman, Kalida's Dick Kortokrax and Ottoville's Dave Kleman were recognized by the Northwest District Board with coach of the year honors in their respective divisions. Williman, who owns a 443-113 career record after this year's 20-0 season, shared Division II boys coach of the year honors with Plymouth's Brad Turson. Kortokrax, who achieved his 800th career win while leading a young Kalida team to an 18-2 record and an unbeaten (7-0) Putnam County League title, shared the Division IV boys coaching award with John Lindsay of Ottawa Hills. And Kleman, who guided Ottoville to a 20-0 season and the No.1-ranking in the polls, was named the Division IV girls coach of the year along with Plymouth's Scott Speicher. The all-Northwest Ohio teams were well-stocked with several players from a number of strong area teams. In the boys selections, Riverdale's Ryan Frey (17.5 ppg) and Ottawa-Glandorf's Josh Johnson (15.2 ppg) joined Craft on the Division III first team. Riverdale's Derek Draper was a third-team pick. Also earning third-team all-Northwest Ohio honors were Findlay's Brock Ammons (14.3 ppg) in Division I and Fostoria's Colin Echelberry (16.6 ppg) in Division II. The Division IV boys all-Northwest teams teemed with area standouts. Carey's Michael Dennis, a 6-8 senior who averaged a double-double of 23.2 points and 13.2 rebounds, headed a first-team lineup that included 6-5 Pandora-Gilboa senior Josh Lee (17.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg), 6-3 Kalida senior Jordan Basinger (16.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and 6-3 New Riegel Senior Dustin Kinn (20.1 ppg, 9.8 rpg). Vanlue's Jordan Cook, a 6-0 senior who averaged 22.6 points and 5.7 assists, headed up the Division IV second team along with McComb's Mason Roth (19.5 ppg), Miller City's Cody Vennekotter (14.9 ppg), Continental's Brock Homier (10.0 ppg), Columbus Grove's Luke Kohls (13.3 ppg) and Jared Horstman of Fort Jennings (21.1 ppg). Arlington's Kevin Rogers (17.4 ppg) and Ada's Konnor Baker (19.6 ppg) were third-team picks. Area schools also had a strong showing in the girls selections, especially in Division IV where Lauren Geroski of Fostoria St. Wendelin (16 ppg), Pandora-Gilboa's Stephanie Recker (14.1 ppg) and Ottoville's Tasha Kaufman (10.1) earned first-team. Riverdale's Lacey Kessler (18 ppg), Arlington's Amelia Recker (18.1 ppg) and New Riegel's Paula Kelbley (10.3 ppg) made the all-Northwest Ohio second team, and Carey's Lauren Jacoby (11.6 ppg), Hopewell-Loudon's Brittany Egbert (15.9 ppg), Kalida's Emily Turnwald (9.2) and Ottoville's Abby Siefker (12 ppg) were third-team picks. Fostoria's Aja Hall, the schools career leader in scoring and rebounding with over 1,600 points and 850 rebounds, joined Hyde on the Division III girls first team. Liberty-Benton sophomore Caite Craft (17.3 ppg) and Patrick Henry senior Tiffany Ehlers (13.7) made the all-Northwest Ohio second team. Also earning second-team recognition was Findlay's Danielle Sallisbury in Division I. A 5-8 junior, Sallisbury averaged 12.7 points a game for the Trojans. Subscribe to The Courier. |
