Locally: UF's Parker, Hyde named all-region
The University of Findlay guard tandem of senior Marcus Parker and junior Nathan Hyde were named Wednesday to the second team all-Midwest Region by Daktronics.

Both players were all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team picks this season.

Parker, the 2007 GLIAC Freshman of the Year, is a four-time all-GLIAC Tournament selection. He is currently averaging 15.1 points, 3.4 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game for the Oilers. Parker has 1,475 career points, ranking him all-time at UF.

Hyde, the 2010 GLIAC Tournament MVP, sports an 18.5 scoring average to go along with 4.0 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.9 assists per game. He has hit a UF record is 91 3-pointers this season and he broke the GLIAC Tournament record for most points in a series (84).

Jamar Smith, a senior at Southern Indiana, is the regional player of the year.

Hatteberg shines

CANTON -- University of Findlay swimmer Lindsay Hatteberg earned all-American honors by reaching the finals of the 50-yard freestyle and finished 16th overall in the NCAA Division II nationals being held at Branin Natatorium in Canto.

Hatteberg swam a 23.67 in the 50 free prelims and a 23.95 in the finals. She teamed with Brittany Balitzkat, Nikki Schnell-McCoy and Jillian Herbst to place 19th in the 200 medley relay (1:47.39).

The NCAA Division II nationals continue today, Friday and Saturday.

Marathon gives $26,000

Marathon Oil Corporation announced recently that the company would be donating $26,000 to the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation to support youth football in the Findlay area.

Marathon Oil pledged $1,000 for every touchdown Roethlisberger accounted for during the 2009 season. Roethlisberger had 4,328 yards and 26 touchdowns passing. He also ran for 82 yards and two TDs.

Over the past three NFL seasons, Marathon Oil has donated $79,000 to support Flag City Midget Football. Those funds have already been used to build bleachers. A storage building is also in the plans.

Kwiat top freshman

ADA -- Ohio Northern All-American Kyle Kwiat has been named 2009-10 Freshman of the Year by D3Wrestling.com.

Kwiat, the Ohio Athletic Conference champion at 174 pounds, won 41 matches and placed fourth in the NCAA Division III tournament last weekend. He opened the Division III meet with three straight wins, then lost a 4-3 decision to No.1-ranked defending national champion Evan Brown of Dubuque (Iowa) in the semifinals and a 5-1 decision to No.2-seed Zach Molitor of Augsburg (Minn.) in the consolation round.

Schnelle All-Academic

ADA -- Ohio Northern's Scott Schnelle has been named to the 2009-10 Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball all-academic team.

Schnelle, a sophomore center majoring in engineering, averaged 9.2 points and 5.5 rebounds for the Polar Bears (12-14, 10-8 OAC). He also led the team with 27 blocked shots.

Rader voted top hitter

ADA -- Ohio Northern University left fielder Matt Rader, a Cory-Rawson graduate, has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week.

Rader hit .529 (9 for 17) during ONU's spring trip. He had a double, two triples, drove in six runs and scored eight in helping the Polar Bears open the season with a 4-0 start.
