With a whistle around his neck and a smile on his face, Florida coach Urban Meyer returned to practice Wednesday following a leave of absence that turned out to be shorter than everyone expected. His stay could be longer than anticipated, too. Although Meyer declined to divulge any details about his health, he said his return was permanent.
Tennessee All-American safety Eric Berry cut his pro timing session with NFL scouts short after suffering a minor toe injury. Berry says he believes he caught one of his toes in a hole on the turf at Tennessee's indoor football complex during the Wednesday event and sat out as a precaution. He participated in the NFL Combine in February and is projected to be among the top picks in the April 22...
Ohio State has added two more years to football coach Jim Tressel's contract -- and has offered him an administrative job when he retires. The nine-year coach of the Buckeyes had his original contract, signed in 2006 and amended twice more, extended through the 2014 season on Tuesday. "We wanted to reward Jim for his exemplary work with our football program and lock him in as our coach for...
The scouts wanted to see Armanti Edwards do one more thing, so one of college football's most decorated quarterbacks dutifully jogged to midfield and began judging punts in the swirling mountain wind. The wiry and speedy QB who led Appalachian State to a stunning victory at Michigan thinks he can be a signal-caller in the pros, too.
A Boise State football player suspended from the team earlier this month has been arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery. Boise police arrested 21-year-old Jason Robinson on Monday on a warrant accusing him of causing bodily harm, permanent disability or permanent disfigurement to another person.
UCLA guard Stan Hasiak has been reinstated to the football team and will participate in spring practice. He had been suspended since Dec. 21 for violating unspecified team rules and did not travel with the team to Washington, D.C., for the Bruins' bowl game against Temple. Coach Rick Neuheisel said Tuesday that Hasiak has done everything that was asked of him during winter quarter.
Former University of South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt has sued the university over his firing. Leavitt, who was fired in January over claims that he grabbed and player by the throat and struck him in the face, filed the complaint Monday against the USF board of trustees and athletic foundation.
Idaho has agreed in principle to give football coach Robb Akey a new contract. Athletic director Rob Spear says details are still being worked out on a new deal for Akey, who led the Vandals to a 9-5 record last season. Akey has told The Idaho Statesman he's agreed to a new five-year extension. The former Washington State assistant is in the third year of his contract, which pays him $258,000...
Mike Leach sat across from his accuser Saturday as Craig James gave sworn testimony in the former coach's lawsuit against Texas Tech. James, whose complaint of mistreatment of his son led to Leach's firing, declined to comment as he walked into the university's administration building before his deposition.
Villanova guards Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher did not start in the NCAA tournament opener against Robert Morris. A team spokesman said coach Jay Wright benched the pair as a "minor teaching point." Their punishment didn't last last long. Reynolds sat out the first 4 minutes of Thursday's game, and Fisher checked in about 30 seconds later.
No offense, John Wall. Florida coach Billy Donovan believes his Gators are about to open the NCAA tournament against someone who's even more dangerous than Kentucky's player of the year candidate. High-scoring BYU guard Jimmer Fredette is 12th in the nation in scoring, and only four players in the NCAA tournament average more than his 21.7 points.
Fed up by his antics on and off the court, Seton Hall fired basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez on Wednesday after a 19-win season. The dismissal came roughly 12 hours after the coach known as "Gonzo" endured an 87-69 loss in the opening round of the NIT, a game in which Seton Hall forward Herb Pope was ejected for hitting Texas Tech player below the belt and Gonzalez picked up his seventh...
John Calipari has coached in enough NCAA tournaments to know that youth can be more of a liability at this time of year than any other. With the talent he has in freshmen such as John Wall, Eric Bledsoe and DeMarcus Cousins, a lack of tournament experience doesn't have to be an issue. The problem, Calipari said, is that you never know.
Talk about an eerie coincidence. Kansas, the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, is facing nearly the exact circumstance as one of the most embarrassing losses in the storied program's history. When the top-ranked Jayhawks (32-2) open the NCAA tournament Thursday against Lehigh, it'll look and feel a whole lot like 2005 -- when they lost to Bucknell in the first round.
Perhaps Rick Barnes and Dino Gaudio should compare notes on how to pull a team out of a late-season funk. The two coaches have similar challenges on their hands heading into Thursday night's matchup between eighth-seeded Texas and ninth-seeded Wake Forest in the NCAA tournament's East Regional.
Purdue's offense is in disarray without Robbie Hummel, and the Boilermakers have run out of time to get it figured out. Hummel tore the ACL in his right knee on Feb. 24, and 10th-ranked Purdue hasn't been the same since. With him, the Boilermakers were 24-3, averaged 73 points per game and shot 46 percent from the field.
Every time Brad Stevens walks into Hinkle Fieldhouse, he peers into the rafters. There he sees the overflowing banners listing conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances and quickly realizes what Butler has become: A national model for mid-major schools. But even with all the attention and success, the third-year coach understands this NCAA tourney will be different for the blue-collar...
California starting forward Omondi Amoke has been suspended indefinitely by coach Mike Montgomery for a violation of team rules, a blow for the eighth-seeded Golden Bears heading into their NCAA opener against No. 7 Louisville on Friday in Jacksonville, Fla. The school provided no further details about what the 6-foot-7 sophomore did to be suspended.
A former Seton Hall basketball player has pleaded not guilty to charges of robbing eight people at gunpoint earlier this week.
