Now that it's warming up outside, it's time to tackle that to-do list that's been growing over the winter. If your list includes home renovations, the Better Business Bureau has some advice to make sure you don't get ripped off. Dick Eppstein is the director of the BBB in Northwest Ohio, and says they get a lot of complaints about contractors who go door-to-door to solicit work... (Audio Below)
Eppstein says this type of scam also can be seen in rural areas by contractors who migrate from the south every year and promise to do barn repair work and end up taking customers to the cleaners.
Even if you are dealing with a locally based contractor you still have to be diligent... (Audio Below)
Eppstein says you should try and go see the work a contractor has done first hand, and always ask a reference if they would hire a company again.
Of course contractors do have to deal with customers who can't be pleased and try and file bad complaints. Eppstein says the BBB works the complaint from both sides to get to the truth of the matter.
