Council Questions Ballfield Maintenance Outsourcing

Tuesday, April 16, 2013                                                9:50 PM

Council put the brakes on an ordinance that would outsource the maintenance of the city's Cube and 5-Plex baseball fields. Rather than pass it on emergency, council only gave it a first reading until it could take a closer look at the situation..

Councilman Randy Ward was comparing the proposed contract with DB Solutions for over $86,000, to the $90,000 the city paid to maintain the fields on their own in 2012. While the savings is not significant, the proposal claims the cost would be capped because of DB's ability to call on volunteers to help with maintenance during tournaments and other high use periods..

Other members of council were against outsourcing the maintenance of the baseball fields because it was taking away part-time jobs from Findlay youth looking to, perhaps, earn money for college. Council hopes to study the matter further and make a decision quickly since the season is already underway.
